If the wired headphones have a microphone in the cable, they can be used for calls.
Using wired 3.5mm headsets for calls
What the connectors mean
- TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve): Audio only. No microphone or call controls.
- TRRS (Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve): Supports microphone and inline controls for calls.
Two common configurations for TRRS with inline controls
When a cable has an inline microphone plus an Answer/End button, it is typically a CTIA-style TRRS connector used by many smartphones.
If the cable also has plus/minus buttons beyond the Answer/End button, there are two common variants:
- Apple-configured (often labeled with an "i"): designed to work with Apple devices.
- Android-configured (often labeled with a "G"): designed to work with Android devices.
Important: A cable labeled Apple or Android may still work for playing audio on other devices, but microphone and control functions can vary by device and cable.
Tips for use
- If you need calling features (microphone and button to answer/end), choose a TRRS cable and verify it is compatible with your device.
- If your headset cable has no microphone, it is TRS and will not support calls.
- Computers and laptops: Some sound cards or operating systems may not support inline remote controls. Using adapters to connect TRRS to other formats can be unpredictable and is not recommended.
