Audio from apps like Netflix, Roku, and Apple TV may use advanced digital audio formats such as Dolby. Headphones with a Digital Optical (TOSLINK) connection typically require PCM digital audio. The built-in DAC in the headphone transmitter can read PCM, but not Dolby Digital.
1. Try PCM output first
- In the app or device playing the content, change the audio output format to PCM.
- In your TV settings, look for digital audio output settings and change to PCM or Stereo (check Advanced Audio Settings if needed).
- App settings usually override TV settings – you may need to make the change directly in the app or app hub settings.
2. If PCM is not available
Use a Digital-to-Analog Decoder (one that converts Dolby Digital to Analog or PCM) connected to the TV, then connect your headphones to the decoder. You may need to adjust settings on the decoder as well.
3. Check your TV's capabilities
Some TVs may block certain digital signals from the optical output. Review your TV's manual to confirm whether the optical output can pass through the required formats. If PCM is not available from your source, a Digital-to-Analog Decoder capable of decoding Dolby Digital is usually the best solution.
