- Ingress Protection (IP) ratings indicate how well a device’s enclosure resists dust and water.
- These ratings come from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

- Important: an IP rating is test-backed. Marketing terms like “waterproof” or “water resistant” are not the same as an IP rating.
What an IP rating tells you
- An IP code has two digits:
- First digit: protection against solid objects (dust and other solids).
- Second digit: protection against liquids (water exposure).
- Some products use an X in the code (e.g., IPX5) when one part (dust or water) isn’t specified.
How to read the digits First digit — protection against solids (0–6)
- 0: No protection
- 1: Protects against large objects (>50 mm)
- 2: Protects against medium objects (>12.5 mm)
- 3: Protects against objects >2.5 mm
- 4: Protects against objects >1.0 mm
- 5: Dust-protected (limited ingress; no harmful effect)
- 6: Dust-tight (no ingress)
Second digit — protection against liquids (0–9, including K)
- 0: No protection
- 1: Vertically dripping water
- 2: Water dripping when tilted up to 15°
- 3: Water sprayed up to 60° from vertical
- 4: Water splashing from any direction
- 5: Water jets from any direction
- 6: Powerful water jets from any direction
- 7: Immersion up to 1 meter
- 8: Immersion beyond 1 meter (depths vary by product)
- 9K: High-pressure, high-temperature water jets (special test)
- If a digit isn’t specified, an X can be used (e.g., IPX5 = water protection 5, but no stated dust protection)
EXAMPLE: What IP55 means for consumer audio devices
- Dust: Limited ingress that won’t impair normal operation.
- Water: Protects against water jets from any direction (think light rain or a gentle spray), not immersion.
- Buyer takeaway: IP55 is better for outdoor use with light rain or splashes. Do not rely on IP55 for swimming, showering, or submersion.
Tips for evaluating audio gear with IP ratings
- Look for the exact IP code on the product or official specs (not just marketing imagery).
- Higher numbers usually mean more protection, but follow the device’s use guidelines (don’t assume immersion is allowed).
- For water-related use, IP55+ helps with rain and splashes, but confirm any immersion limits before exposing the device to water.
Limitations of IP ratings
- IP ratings cover enclosures, not the device’s internal electronics.
- Tests are done in controlled lab conditions; real-world factors (saltwater, chemicals, temperature changes) can affect performance differently.
- IP ratings don’t cover every hazard (e.g., impact resistance, extreme temperatures beyond tested ranges, or how moisture affects wireless performance).
