How you route audio to headphones only (without TV speakers) depends on your television. Here are three common methods:
Option 1: Use the TV's dedicated headphone jack
Connect the headphones to the TV's headphone jack (sometimes also labeled "Audio Out"). The TV will often route all sound to this jack automatically. If the jack is labeled "Audio Out" rather than "Headphones," check the TV's Sound menu for an option to send all sound to the output jack.
Option 2: Connect to the set-top box
Find the audio output jacks on your cable box, DVR, or set-top box and connect the headphones there. This allows the TV speakers and headphones to operate independently – you can mute the TV speakers without affecting the headphones.
Option 3: Set the TV to independent speaker and output mode
Check your TV's manual for a setting that lets the speakers and audio output jacks work independently (sometimes called fixed output). With this setting, you can turn down or mute the TV volume while the headphones continue playing.
