Both the Bluetooth source (phone, tablet, etc.) and the Bluetooth sink (headphones) must support the same codec. Not all codecs are supported by all devices. If a codec is not supported by one side, the connection will fall back to a different compatible codec.
Some codecs (such as aptX Adaptive) are backward compatible with related codecs like aptX HD and aptX LL.
